Reuse The Nymphaeum

Italy

Our design strategy for the Nymphaeum was based on how the ruin was built, in three stages. In the first stage, visitors are greeted by a shallow water park intended as a refreshing spot to relax as well as an acoustic barrier from the main road. In the second stage, down the staircase, visitors can enjoy a play or musical piece under a lightweight structure, acting as both a shelter and a boundary for the secondary stage.

The ruin acts as a backdrop to the new space, through memory. In the third and final stage, the ruin becomes once again a performance space, whilst visitors, actors and musicians enjoy the surroundings and play within the ruin as well as under the new roof structure. It was important for the design to highlight what was left of the ruin and incorporate it as best as we can within the proposed strategy.
